I didn`t pay much attention to quality. For example, Dunlop balls - I didn`t notice that they got much worse, to be honest.
It`s very difficult to remember what it felt like before 2020. I`ve been getting into it over the last couple of years.
I think many players will agree that Dunlop balls, which are most often used in tournaments, are the highest quality balls. Yes, when it gets wet they get heavier, but that happens with all balls.
I heard about production and how there were changes during covid and all that. I noticed this with balls from other companies. This was most evident on the Wilson US Open balls. It was as if we had completely different balls in different weeks - when we played the Canadian Masters, and then Cincinnati.
Last year we played in Montreal and then in Cincinnati - it was impossible to tell that these were the same balls. Can`t be. In Cincinnati they were going bald, but in Montreal they were fluffing up normally, as usual.
I agree that the quality of some balls is declining. It seems to me that over the last couple of years certain balls have become more often chosen as tournament predictions by sport predictions balls, but at the same time they themselves have become much slower. They are much softer and feel more killed.
A good example is the Wilson balls we played with at the Laver Cup and in Shanghai. They were great, it was like you couldn`t go wrong with them. But they are very soft, almost like children`s tennis balls. It was hard to get through. Perhaps they were only ok to play on very fast surfaces.
So for me these Dunlop balls are the best. I haven`t noticed a big drop in quality. They only cause problems in very humid weather.
